MacFrugal’s Furniture – 2009 Business Partner of the Year

The population in Hamilton has suffered the scourges of recessionary times with company closures and job losses. However, the need for furniture, appliances, computers and other household goods still remains. These items are purchased in order to facilitate daily living no matter what the local economic situation is. Lower income households often require purchasing options, which include “rent-to-own” facilities where reasonable goods are available on a payment plan. MacFrugals has made goods available to address this Hamilton community desire. The Hamilton store has been in operation since 2003.

Daily operations of the store required regular replenishment of merchandise on the shelves, so Mr. Clemmensen hired a Goodwill client who needed employment. As an entrepreneur who is always on the lookout for opportunity, Mr. Clemmensen realized that having an appliance repair department on site would save the operation money. Once again, Mr. Clemmensen looked to Goodwill for a suitable candidate who had the ability and willingness to take on the challenge. Staffing needs increased as the economy plummeted and collections of accounts became an issue. Mr.Clemmensen, who clearly understands that the client base at Goodwillï includes candidates with diverse skills, turned to the job developer to search for an appropriate individual to fill the collections position. The departure of a manager opened the way once more for a Goodwill client to get work commensurate with his abilities. To attest further to MacFrugals commitment, two other Goodwill clients were hired to staff the new basement thrift store venture that opened in the Fall/Winter of 2009.

MacFrugal’s has provided employment for Goodwill clients “thereby enhancing their dignity and independence within the community” as active community contributors appreciated for their individual skills and abilities.”

Ricky Andrade – 2009 Worker of the Year

Ricky has worked for Goodwill for 13 years; however the really remarkable thing about Ricky’s story is how he has flourished in his role as a valued member of our dock team. In the last three years, on the dock team Ricky has experienced tremendous growth. With just a little encouragement and partnered with the right staff team Ricky has developed in many ways. Once a rather quiet individual, Rick’s communication skills have emerged as something anyone walking through the dock area would not only notice but enjoy. Not only has he matured, he’s shown a willingness to be helpful and has great character.

Ricky recognized the importance and value of a strong work ethic, persistence and hard work. Not only does Rick enjoy every opportunity to learn from his peers and supervisor, but he does so with a constant smile and appreciation for his co-workers. Goodwill is very proud of the strides Ricky has made in his life as an employee and we are sure that he will continue to do so as he grows in his role.

Edwin Betancur – 2009 Achiever of the Year

As a recent graduate in the Computer Systems Technology field, Edwin had very little experience, which created an employment challenge that might have seemed daunting to some. However working as a team with the Career Development Specialist and Job Developer at Goodwill, Edwin was able to surmount the barriers to his employment.

Due in great part to Edwin’s positive attitude, he now finds himself successfully employed at Criticall Ontario. Without his full participation in his job search, proactive approach to targeting specific employers who were open to his skills and qualifications, perhaps his story wouldn’t have been so bright in today’s economy.

Edwin has proven that given a positive attitude and determination, coupled with a little assistance, independence and dignity are alive and well in Hamilton.
